RICHARD GIBSON - Composer

RICHARD GIBSON (b. Charlottetown PEI) has composed for all instrumental and vocal genres with the exception of opera. Winner of the 1983 SOCAN (PRO) Young Canadian Composer award, Gibson has studied at the graduate level with Peter Paul Koprowski and David Lumsdaine. His music usually contains a high degree of contrapuntal lyricism layered upon a densely chromatic harmonic framework. His piano music (25 Preludes) have proven very popular with prominent performers and his guitar pieces have been enthusiastically received by audiences and performers on the Pacific coast of Canada and in the western US. Representative works include his Piano Trio (Le Barachois), Seven Pieces for Bass Clarinet and Piano, and Poeme du Mois de Juillet, an oratorio for soloists, full chorus, narration and large percussion ensemble which was premiered in 2000. In addition to his teaching duties at the Universite de Moncton, Gibson continues to be actively involved in the production of recordings of classical music in Eastern Canadaand the UK.
